Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten All Time Favorite Books in the Fantasy Genre

As always, TTT is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

We love when we get to run wild with a topic. Particularly when it involves discussing some of our favorite books. So when the topic lets us fangirl over one of our favorite genres, the choice was fairly easy. We immediately decided to do fantasy books, since it's one genre that we both absolutely love to read.

And while you're here make sure & check out our March Madness Book Boyfriend Edition! We're into the second round of voting! This link will take you to the page with all the posts to vote on & to enter our giveaway!

Fantasy, especially high fantasy, is one of my absolute favorite things to read. I love, love, love reading about entirely new worlds. Sadly a lot of my "real-life" friends don't appreciate it as much, which is why I'm very thankful for twitter so I can fangirl over some of my favorite books. I feel like there's a fine line between Sci-Fi and fantasy, and the two can occasionally overlap. So for the purposes of this list, I'm only doing what I consider pure fantasy, meaning they don't take place on Earth. They're set in a totally different world created by the author (with the exception of the two noted below).

I love this series so much. I first read it back in June of 2013, and immediately fell in love. Of course then I had to wait an excruciating 3 whole months to find out the ending. But man, was it worth it. Also, HECTOR.

I cannot WAIT for Ruin & Rising. I've been anxiously awaiting its release since the 2nd book came out last year. I need it now.

Celaena is amazing. Plus if you haven't met Chaol yet, you really, really should.
I binge read both Graceling and Bitterblue. I have yet to read Fire, but I did pick it up at my used bookstore last week for $4. Can't wait to read it!

One of my absolute favorite high fantasy series ever. Sarah actually suggested this one to me a few years ago and I devoured it.
I absolutely adore this series. I'd never read the books until about 10 years ago when my now-husband gave me his books to read. I've been in love with Middle Earth ever since.

I read this series for the first time last fall and read all 4 books in as many days. I love the gender-bending aspect, plus George Cooper is wonderful.

One of my all time favorites. Love CS Lewis' writing so very much.

Bonus picks because sometimes it's hard to distinguish between Sci-Fi & Fantasy and these books are ones I'd put in the Sci-Fi camp, but definitely have fantasy aspects (at least to me. I hope that explanation makes sense. It did in my head) :

I NEEEEEEEED Winter.
 Like RIGHT NOW.

I'm fairly certain I fangirl over this series every. single. time. I get the chance. If you haven't read it yet, you should.

Hey, hey! I'm a little lazy with my Top Ten Tuesday list. No pictures to accompany my post today but at least I have a list, right?! That's what I'm telling myself anyway. Here it is...

1. The Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta.
I have raved and raved about this series. So of course it's on my list.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
This is the first fantasy series I ever read and it's still one of my favorites. I love anything that C.S. Lewis has written. But this series takes the cake. It doesn't get more epic than this.

3. The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
I love this trilogy so much ... And the final book hasn't even been released. I can not wait for Ruin and Rising.

4. Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray
This is such an interesting trilogy. If you haven't read it, you're missing out. Libba Bray is an amazing writer.

5. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Does this really need an explanation? Didn't think so.

6. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
Let me just say that the first three books were fantastic and they're my favorite. City if Glass was the perfect ending for me. After that it was just over done.

7. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
This is a children's book and I love it. It's spooky and heartfelt. Neil Gaiman is a genius.

8. The Diviners by Libba Bray
This book was fantastic. I'm so stoked to read the second book, Lair of Dreams.

9. Percy Jackson and The Olympians by Rick Riordan
The movies didn't even remotely do this series justice. The books were so wonderful. I enjoy anything having to do with Greek mythology, especially when it's accurate.

10. A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
This book was hysterical! I laughed my ass off the entire time. Christopher Moore has the funniest, albeit twisted, sense of humor. Please read his books (unless you're easily offended. Then don't.)

That's all for me! What about you guys?!

Do you have any suggestions for us? What are some of your favorite "high fantasy" books?

  1. I don't really read fantasy that much but I really did love the Lunar Chronicles and the Grisha series. Both actually make me want to try some more fantasy. I think I'll wade in and read a couple more before I really give the genre a chance though.

  2. Gahhh. I own Shadow and Bone and The Diviners and still haven't read them yet. I need to get on that. And, I REALLY want to read These Broken Stars. Also, I feel like I would love Percy Jackson, but like.. that hasn't happened yet either. And, I just finished Scarlet today, so I need to get Cress in my hands immediately! You guys make me have all the things to say! Asdfhidskjfek. I'm done rambling in your comments, now.

  8. Lindsey - we have SO MUCH overlap in our favorites! I did my list on adult stuff mostly, but if I had done YA so many of these would have been on the list! I cannot WAIT for Ruin & Rising and am considering a re-read beforehand to remind myself of the Grisha goodness. I love Alanna so much (am making my way through the Immortals right now - have you read that one?).

And I know, I KNOW I need to read Throne of Glass, These Broken Stars and The Lumetere Chronicles. Ugh - what am I even waiting for!

The only think I'm sorry to tell you is that obviously Hector is my book boyfriend, so... sorry to let you down there. ;)

  9. I was orginally going to say that I'm not a huge fantasy reader and then I saw that you have the Graceling series on here(read it), Cinder(read it) and The Girl of Fire and Thorns(on my Kindle). Guess I read more or have read more, fantasy then I thought. :-)

Side note, love how you did this.
