Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Popular Authors We've Never Read

As always, TTT is hosted by The Broke & the Bookish

This week's topic is Top Ten Popular Authors We've Never Read. These took a little more thought than usual. Actual thinking was involved, trying to rack our brains for authors that we hear about, but have never actually picked up one of their books.

Also, throughout this month, we're having March Madness: Book Boyfriend Edition! We've created a bracket of 64 of our favorite guys (Classics, Adult Fiction, and YA) and are having you guys vote on your favorites! See the page (with links to each post) here. And did we mention there's a GIVEAWAY too? So stop by and check it out!

This one was more tricky for me. I'm much more likely to tell you what authors I HAVE read vs. those I haven't. In order to make this a little easier, I opted to just do YA authors I haven't read.

1. John Green (particularly The Fault in Our Stars).

I know I'm probably missing out on this one, but I just can't bring myself to read a book I know is going to depress me. Plus books hyped up as much as this one tend to make me nervous.

2. Sarah Dessen

I want to read some of her books. They sound great, and definitely the kind of stories I like. Sound off in the comments below and let me know which ones I should read first.

3. Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy)

Are vampires still in? Do I need to make the time to read this series? I know the movie tanked recently, but are the books worth it?

4. Markus Zusak (The Book Thief)

*hangs head* I should read this right? I know I should.

5. Jodi Meadows (Infinite).
I have this on my Kindle. It's been there since January. I should really get on this now that all 3 books are out. (Also, please don't tell Alexa, it's one of her favorites).

6. Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson Series)

These are technically MG, but I have no legitimate excuse for not reading them. At all. I even borrowed them from a friend a few years ago and just never read them. Gillian's obsessive tweeting and review last month have moved these up on my list. Hopefully soon I'll get around to it.

Honorable Mentions:

Susan Dennard, Jenny Han, Jennifer Armentrout and Victoria Schwab.

1. Rainbow Rowell

I actually have Fangirl and Attachments downloaded and ready to go on my Nook. I just haven't gotten to them. I know, I know. I'll get there someday.

2. Veronica Rossi

I have Under the Never Sky on my Nook. It's one of MANY books I have downloaded with the intention to read. I'm attempting to read them all before I buy anymore. Let's see how that goes.

3. Diana Peterfreund

Oy Vey! Can you guess?! ... I have For Darkness Shows the Stars on my Nook. Are you starting to see the pattern here? I'm a compulsive book buyer.

4. Rae Carson

I could have sworn I've read The Girl of Fire and Thorns but alas I was wrong. Lindsay and I were just talking about this. Why I haven't read this series yet is a mystery to me.

5. Lauren DeStefano

I don't have any of these on my Nook. Shocking, no? However, Perfect Ruin is on my list once I finish everything else on my list first.

(NOTE: Lindsay has, in fact, read books from all of these authors and pushed them on Sarah to read. Fact.)

So... any author in particular you think either of us should read RIGHT NOW?

  1. YES GO READ VAMPIRE ACADEMY. :) And Jennifer Armentrout!! She is my biggest author crush.

Oh and look at that, the rest of your lists I haven't read either. Fail. :(

  2. Ok! From the top! I have read all the John Green stuff and think it's great (though not like UHMAHZING). I personally love Alaska the most. Vampire Academy is so great, and from what I can tell part of the reason the movie tanked is because they marketed it so differently from the actual FEEL of the books, which isn't pink and glamourous. YES you should read The Book Thief, and for me the Percy Jackson series is worth reading just to set you up for the Heroes of Olympus series which is FANTASTIC.

I love Rowell SO MUCH, but E&P is my absolute favorite. I can't wait for Landline! I was also a long-time hold out on Under the Never Sky, but I just read it and YES. HOly crap. It is possibly one of my very favorite YA dystopians. Top 3 at least. HIGHLY recommended. I love the Girl of Fire & Thorns series, though for me it really comes into its own at Book 2.

Otherwise, I am hanging my head in shame along with you gals. Lots of these authors are on my TBR. So many books, so little time!

  3. I haven't read any of Jennifer Armentrout's books yet. I highly recommend Rainbow Rowell and Lauren DeStefano though!

  4. I hated the freaking Book Thief with the fire of a million suns. My hatred of it only confirmed my longtime commitment to staying far, far away from books with massive amounts of hype. I still get angry when I think about all the undeserved hype and the smug narrator constantly giving away the ending and pivotal plot developments.

The only John Green I've read is Will Grayson, Will Grayson, as the required GLBT book in the YA Lit class I took. I actually preferred David Levithan's chapters in that book, and didn't really care much for Mr. Green's writing style.

    1. The narrator of The Book Thief was Death. That was the point of his smugness. Death always wins in the end. Everyone dies.

  5. I've not seen the VA movie, but the series was beyond excellent. The first book is good, but does a lot of building. Everything past that was a phenomenal reading experience, imo. I've read a few John Green books and enjoyed them. Will Grayson, Will Grayson (if I remember) wasn't that sad. So it might be a good place to start if you fear the ugly cry.

And Sarah, pick up Fangirl soon! It rocked my world and I never wanted the book to end.

  6. The Vampire Academy Series is awesome, but don't try to read Bloodlines, the follow-up series. It's horrid!

  7. Great list! I'm embarrassed to say I have only read John Green and Rainbow Rowell, who are both great!

  8. Yes, vampires are still in, and you should absolutely make time to read Richelle Mead. You can fall in love with his hero, Dimitri, and then tell us he wrung you out.

  9. Interesting list, I haven't heard of some of these authors!

    Here's my TTT!

  10. Cool list!! If you want to read Sarah Dessen I totally recommend her older books. I thought those ones were way better (Just Listen, Lock & Key). I love John Green and Rainbow Rowell. Fangirl is fabulous and TFIOS and Looking for Alaska are excellent writing. I haven't read a lot of the rest of your authors either. I'm not a big Vampire or Dystopian person so that's pretty much why :(

    1. Lock & Key and Just Listen are my favorite Sarah Dessen books. Along for the Ride was pretty good too.
